Shopify experts in Hawaii: a founder’s guide

Renan Hernandez · // TRADEWINDSTACK · KAUA’I, HI

If you run a Shopify store from Hawaii, you have two real options: hire a mainland agency that doesn’t know your market, or DIY through theme tutorials at midnight. Neither ends well. This is for founders looking for a third option — and yes, it’s also a pitch for what I do. The information is still useful even if you hire someone else.

What "Shopify expert" actually means

The term is loose. It can mean any of these, and they’re not interchangeable:

  • Theme developer: writes Liquid, edits sections, builds custom layouts. Hourly, $80–$180.
  • Performance specialist: conversion rate optimization, page speed, checkout config. Project-based, $1,500–$8,000.
  • Email/SMS specialist: Klaviyo flows, segmentation, campaigns. Retainer, $800–$3,500/month.
  • Paid ads specialist: Meta, Google, sometimes TikTok. Retainer, $1,000–$5,000/month plus ad spend.
  • Generalist / fractional lead: all of the above, at the strategy layer. Retainer, $1,500–$6,000/month.

Most "Shopify experts" on Upwork are theme developers. Most agencies are paid-ads or email shops with a Shopify designer on staff. The generalist — someone who can audit the whole stack and tell you what to fix first — is rarer and usually most useful early on.

What changes when you’re based in Hawaii

Time zone friction. HST is 3–6 hours behind every mainland market. If your agency is in Austin, their 9am stand-up is your 4am. The back-and-forth that should take a day takes three. A local or West Coast operator is faster.

Shipping and tax setup. Hawaii is domestic, but most fulfillment apps treat it like Alaska or Puerto Rico — flat-rate shipping breaks, GET (general excise tax) gets miscalculated, and customers see "international shipping" warnings at cart. A mainland agency misses all three until customers complain.

Audience and creative. "Aloha" in your hero reads as authentic if you’re here and kitsch if you’re not. Mainland creatives default to stock palm trees. Local creatives know what actually sells — small-batch, made on-island, names that carry meaning. The wrong tone tanks your CPM.

How to choose

Start with a one-time audit. Before retaining anyone, pay for a fixed-scope review of your whole stack. You’ll know what’s broken and whether you trust the operator. The output is a ranked fix list.

If the audit reveals build issues, hire a one-time setup project (theme rebuild, schema, Klaviyo). One-time fee, no retainer.

Only retain after the foundation is fixed. Retainers make sense when infrastructure is stable and you’re scaling. Until then they waste money re-fixing the same foundation every month.

Questions to ask before you hire

  • "Show me a Shopify build you did for a brand under $50k MRR." If they can only show enterprise work, the playbook won’t fit you.
  • "What’s the most recent Klaviyo flow you rebuilt, and what was the revenue-per-recipient delta?" Real numbers, not "we drove results."
  • "What’s your time zone and typical response window?" Important on island time.
  • "Do you charge for the audit and apply it to the project?" A "free audit" is sales theater. A paid audit is real work.
  • "Who actually does the work?" At agencies, the senior who pitched you doesn’t do the build. Founder-led, the same person handles both.

TradeWindStack — what I do

I’m based on Kaua’i. I run paid ads (Meta and Google), build Shopify themes, write Klaviyo flows, and do the brand work that ties them together. Fourteen years across multiple end-to-end brand builds. Recent receipts: 750% ROAS for a Kaua’i tour operator over 9.5 months, and a full Shopify rebuild for a haircare brand in seven days.

The Roadmap — $497. One-time. A full review of your store, ad accounts, and email flows with a ranked fix list. Credited toward what follows if you continue within 30 days.

The Setup — $3,500. One-time. Full Shopify rebuild plus Klaviyo welcome flow plus brand voice guide. 30-day sprint.

The Retainer — $1,500/month. Ongoing ad management plus content. 3-month minimum. Capped at three brands.

If none of that fits, the Roadmap alone is worth the $497 and you can take the fix list to anyone. That’s the whole point.
